I heard Angelo Pizzo speak a couple of years ago. He said Hershey was by far the most difficult actor to work with. He said she made it be known she was extremely unhappy to be in the film and made it known every day.
Pizzo also said Hackman was certain the movie would fail. He believed that up until the day he saw a rough final cut of the movie and was stunned how good it was. Pizzo said Hackman asked director David Anspaugh, “How did you do that?”
True! During the montage where Hickory is finally coming together as a team Hackman and Hopper are shown on the bench after a made shot and Hopper's laughing uproariously at something Hackman said. A year or two before Hopper died he told Anspaugh that Hackman had said words to the effect of: Hopper I hope you've invested well because after this no one will hire either one of us. This movie is a career-ender.
