A few years back I wrapped up grad school with a dissertation on how an emerging mass medium came of age in a 19th-century presidential election. My topic, I felt at the time, will be evergreen. Every decade or two there will be a new and disruptive communications technology triggering hope and fear.
The dissertation did the job. My committee chair shook my hand and clasped my shoulder. Congratulations, Dr. Gasaway.
Then, somehow, I soon found myself writing about sports. The opportunity to do so professionally was amazing.
One of the things I appreciated most about a sports gig was that it required me to stretch. After sidling into journalism through the back door marked “analytics,” I was encouraged by impressive colleagues to try additional doors they knew well. I loved the work.
Today marks another effort in this same developmental spirit. In the coming weeks there will be posts about past presidential elections and any light they may shed on 2024. American political history more broadly will be on the menu as well. Finally, work is afoot under “none of the above.”
